Tk’emlups te Secwepemc [Kamloops, BC]
The First Nations Infrastructure Institute (FNII) Development Board adds our voice to the growing chorus of First Nations communities and Indigenous organizations calling for individual and collective action in the wake of the discovery of remains of 215 children on the former grounds of Kamloops Indian Residential School.
As an Indigenous organization headquartered on Tk’emlups te Secwepemc lands we lower our heads in deep sorrow with our host Nation and thank you for your ongoing courage and strength in seeking peace and justice for the 215 children identified, their families and communities.
Over the past several days many of our non-Indigenous partners have asked us – what can we do?
FNII encourages our affiliates, partners and allies to read the complete Truth and Reconciliation Report and it’s 94 recommendations, attend local events and wear orange in solidarity with all children who attended Indian Residential Schools, and be an active witness by bringing this conversation to your friends and family.
In closing, this news has re-opened wounds for Indigenous people. Please recognize that in the coming days, weeks and months many of your Indigenous peers will need to prioritize community work and healing.
